Things you will need
· Brush
· Gloves
· Palettes (Disposable paper ones will be ok.)
· Spray bottle
·Tattooinks (Blue, Yellow, and red are necessary. Grey, white, black are option colors.)

1. Making bright colors
Tips: By mixing bright colors together to make bright color.
· Orange : Mix yellow with red
· Green: Mix blue and yellow.
· Lime Green: Mix yellow with a bit of green.
· Teal Green: Add a bit of green or yellow with blue .
· Violet-Blue: Mix red with blue.
· Purple: Mix red with a bit of blue, or violet.

2. Making light colors
Tips: By adding white lighten colors.
· Pink: Mix a bit of red with white.
· Coral: Mix red and white.
· Aqua: Mix a bit of teal green with white.
· Peach: Mix a bit of orange with white.
· Off-white: Ecru, mix a bit of yellow with white.
· Mint Green: Mix a bit of green with white.
· Lavender: Mix a bit of violet with white.
· Orchid : Mix a bit of purple with white.
· Light Blue: Mix a bit of blue with white.

3.Making dark colors (shades)
Tips: By adding the opposite color on the color wheel or black.
· Dark Red: Mix a bit of black with red.
· Dark Green: Mix a bit of black with green.
· Olive Green: Mix a bit of black with yellow.
· Dark Turquoise: Mix a bit of red to blue.
· Brown (dark orange): Mix a bit of black or blue with orange. Or mix green and red.
· Dark Violet-Blue: Mix a bit of black or yellow to violet-blue.
· Dark Blue: Mix a bit of black or orange with blue.
· Dark Purple: Mix a bit of black or lime green with purple.

4.Making grayish, or muted colors
Tips: Adding both black and white or the opposite color.
· Muted Red: Mix both black and white with red.
· Light Brown : Add both black (or blue) and white to orange.
· Light Olive: Mix both white and black (or violet-blue) to yellow.
· Gray-Green: Add both white and black (or magenta) to green.
· Gray-Blue: Mix both white and black (or orange) with blue.
· Grayish Violet-Blue: Add both white and black (or yellow) to violet-blue.
· Muted Purple: Add both white and black (or lime green) to purple.

5.White, Black, and Gray
· White: White can't be mixing together from other colors. You need to buy it.
· Black: You will have black by mixing yellow, red and blue. But it will lighter than the true black, so if you want the true black, you have to buyit.
· Gray: Gray is white and black mixed together.

The sewing machine has come a long way since its invention in the 19th century- nowadays modern automatic, electronic and computerized machines provide a wealth of ready- made embroidery stitches and patterns.

Serwing is no longer just for old ladies popping out to the haberdashery shop to get a few buttons. As with many other things it has moved with the times and embraced technology.

The sewing machine can also, of course, be used as a replacement for hand stitching for techniques such as appliqué, quilting, cutwork, etc. In addition, creative and inventive freestyle machine embroidery can be produced with an ordinary sewing machine, provided it has a drop-feed and zigzag facility. It is essential to get to know the finer points of your sewing machine and master the ordinary stitching techniques — once you have done this you can embark on creative work with confidence.

Some techniques may require adjustment of the tension. For normal stitching the top and bottom threads should be equally tensioned, producing an even stitch with the top and bottom threads linked precisely, but this is not always necessary for embroidery stitches.

Fabrics

For machine embroidery with the foot on, most types of fabric are suitable, although those which stretch easily need careful handling. For free machining, firm fabrics such as calico or poplin are easiest for the beginner.

Stitching through an additional backing fabric, which acts as a support, will prevent puckering, particul arly for light fabrics.

Threads

Most types of sewing cotton can be used, but machine embroidery threads now include shaded and metallics, which greatly increase the possibilities. For additional texture, various types of cord, as well as knitting, crochet and hand embroidery threads, can be couched by machine.

Needles

Machine needles come in sizes from 120 (heavy) to 70 (very fine). The average sizes, 90 and 100, are best for embroidery. Also available are twin and triple needles for parallel lines, and hem stitch and double hem stitch needles.

Designs

The thin line which straight machine stitching produces gives a delicate spidery effect which can result in rather weak designs. However, the stitching can be built up, overlapped and massed to form close textures, which can produce exciting effects.

Some embroiderers like to work freehand without marking the design on the fabric. However, a few lightly marked guidelines will give you confidence to make a start. If you prefer a more precise approach, the reversed design, drawn on thin tracing or greaseproof paper can be tacked to the back of the fabric and the main outlines stitched through the paper which is then torn away.

Flat ballet shoes are popular footwear for both girls and women. These are comfortable and fashionable shoes that are great additions to any shoe wardrobe. If you have moderate sewing skills it is possible to make your own ballet shoes out of cotton fabric and leather. Experiment with different colors and patterns.

Things you'll need:
12X12-inch square of leather
24X12-inch square of heavy-weight cotton fabric
Ready-made shoes that fit well
Pencil and paper
Fabric marker
Sewing machine
Sewing notions (pins, thread, scissors)
1/2-inch-wide elastic

1. Place the paper onto a work surface and place the ready-made shoes onto the paper. Use a pencil to arefully trace around the outside edges of both shoes to create outlines of the soles. Label the left and right sole patterns. Extend the outlines by half an inch for seam allowances, and cut out the extended outlines with the scissors.

2. Place the leather onto a work surface with the wrong side facing up. Place the paper sole patterns onto the leather and trace around the patterns with the fabric marker. Cut out the sole outlines with the scissors.

3. Place the paper sole patterns onto another piece of paper. You need to make a pattern for the upper part of the ballet shoes. The inside edge of the upper piece should match the outside edge of each sole piece. Extend the pattern out from this edge 3 inches, as shown in the diagram. You may need to experiment while making this pattern piece until you have a piece that will work. Add a half-inch around the edges for seam allowances.

Make both a left and a right upper-pattern piece using the left and right sole pieces. Label the left and right patterns. Cut out the paper pattern pieces with the scissors.

4. Fold the cotton fabric onto your work surface with the wrong sides facing out. Place the pattern pieces onto the cotton and cut out the cotton pieces following the pattern. You need a total of four cotton fabric pieces (two for each shoe).

5. Turn under the raw edges of the inside of the cotton shoe pieces a half-inch. Press this edge and sew along the fold 3/8-inch from the folded edge to finish the inside edges.

6. Place the left shoe pieces together with the right sides facing each other and sew both edges together with a half-inch seam allowance. Repeat with the right shoe pieces in the same fashion.

7. Match the upper portion of the left shoe to the left sole with the right sides facing each other. Sew around the edges with a half-inch seam allowance. Repeat with the right shoe in the same fashion.

8. Turn the shoes right side out and put the shoes on. Measure across the top of the foot between the side edges of the shoes. Remove the shoes.

9. Cut two lengths of elastic to the measurement taken in step 8 and sew the elastic to the inside edges of the shoes to add comfort and security while you are wearing the ballet shoes.

How to Clean Your Sewing MachineSewing is fun and easy with a sewing machine. You can easily create a multitude of projects- from a baby mat to a tote bag to summer dresses- and have beautiful results. But what happens when it gets dirty, filled with thread and lint, and stops working at its' highest compacity? Try these seven simple steps to take your sewing machine from tapped out to top notch!

Step 1: Unplug your sewing machine and remove needle, thread spool and bobbin.

Step 2: Remove lint from the exterior of your machine by gently wiping the machine casing and exposed parts with a soft, lint-free cloth. Remove stubborn dirt stains with a dampened cloth and mild soap.

Step 3: Use a small lint brush and/or canned, compressed air to remove lint from thread guides and other tight areas.

Step 4: Move the slide plate toward you as far as it will go and remove throat plate as per instructions found in your owner's manual. Some throat plates can be snapped out of position, others must be unscrewed.

Step 5: Remove lint from area in and around bobbin case with canned air and/or lint brush.

Step 6: Remove excess lint from in and around bobbin case by removing bobbin case as per owner's manual instructions and using tweezers to extract lint that has been packed under or around bobbin case.

Step 7: Place one or two drops of machine oil in oiling points indicated in either the owner's manual or on the sewing machine. The areas of your machine that require oiling will be determined by the machine model.

Tips & WarningsWork in a well-lit area. Substitute a cotton swab for a lint brush.

After oiling your machine, stitch some scrap fabric. Any excess oil will be deposited here rather than on the fabric you are using for your next project. Have your sewing machine professionally serviced at least once a year.

Check your owner's manual before removing any screws from your sewing machine. Some areas of your machine require servicing by professionals only

Needlework In The 21st Century

The amazing wealth of glorious designs available today is not least amongst the great benefits of living in this age rather than one of those fascinating earlier periods.

We have unlimited access to the resources of the world and the experience and techniques generated through past centuries. The richness of the heritage from which we can so readily seek counsel and inspiration, with the availability of both natural and manmade materials should enable us to create some of the finest achievements of all time. But the trends of the 20th century have unfortunately not yet produced needlework of that excellence. You won't find great needleworks in your local haberdashery shop.

Although it is still too early to judge, it would at present appear that since the end of the 19th century, needlework, like most other art forms, has been desperately feeling for a course and experimenting inconsistently in an effort to discover a satisfactory identity. A number of satellite fashions have shone with varying qualities, a few with distinction, but a general theme and direction has not yet been established.

The Embroiderers' Guild, an educational charity, founded in 1906 to promote the craft to the highest possible standards, has been influential in co-ordinating new ideas of design and technique. The Guild also has a substantial historic collection which has recently been moved to the organisation's new headquarters at Hampton Court Palace.

The art of needlework from medieval times progressed in multiple ways, identified and co-ordinated by a unity of purpose and feeling which disciplined and contributed to skills and designs. The relatively recent lack of integration originated only in the last century when no permanent form emerged after a series of revivals. William Morris was the principal pioneer of the modern movement but failed narrowly to achieve a style descendant from the wide scope of historical and cultural forms which had influenced him. He was perhaps too retrospective in his approach, neglecting the philosophy of contemporary technical achievements, and unable to accept the benefits they had to offer.

Machinery superseded many domestic crafts but did not threaten needlework since its products replaced only what had already become artless. Some forms of mass-produced embroidery were still carried out by hand, as at Arthur H. Lee and Sons, of Birkenhead, Cheshire, where decorative crewelwork curtains were made to old designs, with coarse wools and using up to four threads in the needle at once. These and other traditional designs were carried on timelessly as long as fashion demanded. Crewelwork made in India for the European market is still available by the yard in London department stores.

More ambitious attempts at originality with a wide range of materials were tried out simultaneously. Ann Macbeth's designs were distinctly simplified, light and consciously not overworked. She enjoyed considerable success supplying designs to Liberty's and other shops. Elaborate stitching was not much favoured until after the influence of Cubist painters in the I920s, when texture was again considered important.

Three-dimensional effects reminiscent of stumpwork, but much less intricate, were attempted and quick appliqué became fashionable again, often on a huge scale.' Vestments designed by Matisse for the chapel at Venice are of applied work in a strong, bright design. The technique is a very ancient and effective one but often the quality of workmanship is limited.

The celebrated Overlord Embroidery 2 commemorating aspects of the Second World War and made by the Royal School of Needlework is of appliqué and on a massive scale, being 272 feet (83 metres) long and reminiscent of the medieval saga hangings, besides its obvious parallel with the Bayeux Tapestry. Its artistry is in reflecting the illustrative techniques of the period such as newspaper photography; it does this remarkably, and very much with the favoured colours and textures of the times. The subject depicted is suitably momentous and eminently worthy of such a large-scale work.

A less serious but charming hanging, of three panels, totalling about 8ft in length, was designed by Belinda, Lady Montagu to mark, in 1979, the 9th anniversary of the New Forest. It combines, in a rich variety of textures, appliqué work, canvas work and embroidery, and depicts vignettes of historical and social interest within a general theme of natural history.

Mrs Rachel Kay-Shuttleworth (d.i967) was a collector and teacher founding a centre for study at her home, Gawthorpe Hall, Lancashire; Mrs Theodore Roosevelt Jr. (d. 1960), daughter-in-law of the American president, was another notable and versatile embroideress.

Her pictorial designs for screens and pictures contain an element of humour; one picture portrays a 'Sea Serpent' while a screen depicts monkeys swinging about in tropical vegetation. The tradition of patchwork quilting has also been carried on throughout the 20th century in America and in England, where it has taken more the form of a revival.

In canvas embroidery, however, the emphasis has been on novel designs and interesting stitches, a prominent contribution of needlework teachers. A large amount of work has been directed to kneeling hassocks and cushions for churches; many cathedrals have impressive quantities of neat and bright needlework, standing out against a foil of stone and woodwork in majestic settings. Some of the work is rich in design and intricate in workmanship. Good examples can be seen at Lichfield, St Albans, Wells and Exeter cathedrals.

At Winchester, a body of about zoo embroiderers was co-ordinated by Louisa Pesel on a project known as 'A St Swithin's Day Enterprise', making kneelers and cushions. Miss Pesel had previously done needlework for the private chapel of the Bishop of Winchester at Wolvesey, based on 17th-century sampler designs. Artistically and technically she adhered to two fundamental rules that are crucial to successful embroidery. If the work is to be multi-coloured, the variety of stitches must be reasonably limited and conversely, if a variety of stitches is to be displayed, a limited range of colours should be used. In monochrome embroidery a variety of stitches gives shading and textural interest. This was especially a feature of blackwork and early crewelwork.

Nowadays 'serious' modern needlework is made with high pretensions, usually in picture form, or as hangings, often to be regarded as 'fine art'. Divorced from utilitarian characteristics, it is often gross in scale and design and like so much of the 'art' of our times, aims to shock our sensibilities. Some pieces show bold strokes of originality, sometimes in an exciting way but often wild, confused and undisciplined, with little true content.

Beryl Dean however has been responsible for some remarkable pieces which combine a feeling of the times with interesting technical innovations and, above all, appropriateness. Her cope, stole, mitre and morse made for the Bishop of London on the occasion of the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977, echo in a collage effect of specific architectural motifs, a sense of binding unity which is embodied in Church and State. The design includes St Paul's Cathedral, seventy-three London churches and two Royal Peculiars. Some modern vestments attempt to draw our attention by the use of brilliant colouring but these Jubilee pieces are especially attractive being worked in subtle and harmonious shades of yellow-golds and silver-greys.

Colour judgement is one of the most important factors of needlework and one of the least understood. The softness, subtlety and brilliance of good dyes are perhaps more crucial even than a good design. Dr Johnson quoted a useful extract from Addison in his Dictionary:

In a curious brede of needlework, one colour falls away by such just degrees, and another rises so insensibly, that we see the variety without being able to distinguish the total vanishing of the one from the first appearance of the other.

This may have been referring to Florentine embroidery but the suggest ion of blending tones is a general lesson for all needlework.

The catchword 'soulless' is sadly as applicable to much modern needlework as to other aspects of contemporary arts and crafts but it is to be hoped that the position will be rectified by a humbler re-examination of the invaluable and inestimably beautiful work bequeathed by previous generations.

A willingness to recognise continuity and to derive an essence from the best is the crux of creating works that will uplift and adorn the age. We have an important responsibility to contribute to the world's artistic achievements; the resources at our fingertips are tremendous; we can travel almost anywhere to consult wonderful designs and can see countless ideas through photographs and books.

A new style, neither brutal nor twee, would help to restore self-confidence and interest; perhaps 'post-modernism' will provide it. There are, happily, signs in architecture, and elsewhere, of a strong new form, with a definite language of historical learning, coupled with a richer depth of metaphor. Bald functionalism has had its day and, unashamedly, the age-old grammars are at last being used and extended as the basis of exciting new achievements. Surely the very richness of historical needlework ensures that the future of the craft will be continuously buoyant instead of just being practised by a few haberdashery enthusiasts?

Steps:

1. Measure and cut 25 6 1/2-inch squares of fabric and a 30-inch square of fabric.

2. Divide the 6 1/2-inch squares of fabric into five piles of five squares each. Sew each pile of squares into a strip by sewing the squares together side-by-side with a 1/4-inch seam allowance.

3. Sew the strips of squares together with a 1/4-inch seam allowance along the long edges to form a large square. The large square will be a 5-by-5 grid of all the smaller squares.

4. Measure and cut two foot-long pieces of 1-inch-wide ribbon.

5. Place the 30-inch square of fabric and the pieces together square of fabric together with the right sides facing each other. Line up the ends of the two pieces of ribbon you cut. Place the two pieces of ribbon between the two squares 6 inches in from one corner so the ends of the ribbon are flush with the edge of the fabric. Pin the two pieces of fabric together along the edges and the ribbons in place between them.

6. Sew along all four edges of the two squares with a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Leave a 6-inch opening in the middle of one of the edges. Turn the play mat right side out through the 6-inch opening.

7. Fold the raw edges of the fabric in a 1/2-inch along the 6-inch opening. Iron these folds and the rest of the four edges of the play mat.

8. Top stitch along all four sides of the play mat with a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Use a decorative stitch for the top stitch to give the play mat an added decorative touch.

9. Lay the play mat out flat with the ribbon strips coming out of the top edge. Fold the play mat in half left to right. Fold it in half again in the same direction. Roll the play mat up from the bottom to the top. Wrap the ribbon strips around the rolled up play mat and tie them in a bow to make the play mat easy to pack in the diaper bag.

Hand-knitting

Hand-knitting is a special case of knitting, in which the knitted fabric is produced by hand.

Embroidered T-ShirtWeft-knit fabrics can be divided into two types: those that have selvages (side edges) and those that are tubes, where the side edges have been joined. The former are knit using "flat knitting", whereas the latter are knit using "circular knitting", also known as "knitting in the round".

In flat knitting, the hand-knitter generally knits from right-to-left on one side of the fabric, turns the work (over), and then knits right-to-left back to the starting position. Usually one side of the fabric is considered the right side, the one that faces outwards for viewing; the side that faces inwards, towards the body, is known as the wrong side. Thus, flat knitting involves knitting one row on the right side, then one row on the wrong side, etc. Stitches knit on the wrong side are reversed in appearance; for example, a knit stitch carried out on the wrong side will appear as a purl stitch on the right side, and vice versa. Thus, the uniform stockinette fabric requires that the hand-knitter knit all the stitches on the right side, and purl all the stitches on the wrong side. For comparison, garter-stitch fabric is produced if the knitter knits (or purls) every stitch in every row, regardless of which side is being worked.

In circular knitting, the knitter generally knits everything from one side, usually the right side. Circular knitting is usually carried out on a single circular needle, although this becomes more difficult as the radius of the tube gradually shrinks. In such cases, the knitter can resort to a variety of alternative techniques, such as double-pointed needles, knitting on two circular needles,[1] a M?bius strip-like "magic needle" approach, or careful use of slip-stitch knitting or equivalently double knitting to knit the back and front of the tube.

There are well-nigh an infinite number of possible combinations of knitting stitches, the favorites of which have been collected into stitch treasuries.[2] A piece of knitting begins with the process of casting on (also known as "binding on"), which involves the initial creation of the stitches on the needle. Different methods of casting on are used for different effects: one may be stretchy enough for lace, while another provides a decorative edging ??Provisional cast-ons are used when the knitting will continue in both directions from the cast-on. There are various method employed to "cast on," such as the "thumb method" (also known as "slingshot" or "long-tail" cast-ons), where the stitches are created by a series of loops that will, when knitted, give a very loose edge ideal for "picking up stitches" and knitting a border; the "double needle method" (also known as "knit-on" or "cable cast-on"), whereby each loop placed on the needle is then "knitted on," which produces a firmer edge ideal on its own as a border; and many more. The number of active stitches remains the same as when cast on unless stitches are added (an increase) or removed (a decrease).

Most Western-style knitters follow either the English style (in which the yarn is held in the right hand) or the Continental style (in which the yarn is held in the left hand). A third but less common method, called combination knitting, may also be used.

Once the knitted piece is finished, the remaining live stitches are "cast off." Casting (or "binding") off loops the stitches across each other so they can be removed from the needle without unravelling the item. Although the mechanics are different from casting on, there is a similar variety of methods.

In knitting certain articles of clothing, especially larger ones like sweaters, the final knitted garment will be made of several knitted pieces, with individual sections of the garment knit separately and then sewn together. Seamless knitting, where a whole garment is knit as a single piece, is also possible. Elizabeth Zimmermann is probably the best-known proponent of seamless or circular knitting techniques. Smaller items, such as socks and hats, are usually knit in one piece on double-pointed needles or circular needles.

One of the earliest known examples of knitting was finely decorated cotton socks found in Egypt in the end of the first millennium AD.[4] The first knitting trade guild was started in Paris in 1527. [5] With the invention of the knitting machine, however, knitting "by hand" became a useful but non-essential craft. Similar to quilting, spinning, and needlepoint, knitting became a social activity.

Hand-knitting has gone into and out of fashion many times in the last two centuries, and at the turn of the 21st century it is enjoying a revival. According to the industry group Craft Yarn Council of America, the number of women knitters in the United States age increased 150% in the two years between 2002 and 2004.[6] While some may say knitting has never really gone away, this latest reincarnation is less about the make do and mend of the 1940and 50 and more about making a statement about individuality as well as developing an innate sense of community. Additionally, many contemporary knitters have an interest in blogging about their knitting, patterns, and techniques.

There are now numerous groups that are not only growing individually, but also forming international communities. Communities also exist online, with blogs being very popular, alongside online groups and social networking through mediums such as Yahoo! Groups, where people can share tips and techniques, run competitions, and share their patterns. More people are finding knitting a recreation and enjoying the hobby with their family. Knitting parties also are becoming popular in small and large communities around the U.S. and Canada.

The oral histories of many knitters have been collected, and suggest that hand-knitting is often associated with compassion.[8] "I knit love into every stitch" is a common refrain.

Knitting especially large or fine garments such as sweaters can require months of work and, as gifts, may have a strong emotional aspect. The so-called sweater curse expresses the experience that a significant other will break up with the knitter immediately after receiving a costly hand-knit gift such as a sweater. A significant minority of knitters claim to have experienced the sweater curse; a recent poll indicated that 15% of active knitters say they have experienced the sweater curse firsthand, and 41% consider it a possibility that should be taken seriously. Although sometimes labeled a "superstition", the sweater curse is not treated in knitting literature as anything paranormal.

Hand-knitting is generally relaxing and repetitive, Some practitioners have noted that these factors, combined with its compassionate nature, make hand-knitting well-suited for meditational or spiritual practice.

Knitting is sometimes featured in literature. Knitting and its techniques may be used as a metaphor; its meditative and spiritual aspects may be emphasized; it may signal various types of domesticity; or it may be used for dramatic irony, as when an apparently harmless knitter proves deadly and implacable. Examples from 19th century novels include Madame Thse Defarge in Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities, Anna Makarovna in Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace, various characters in Jane Austen's novels and Miss Ophelia in Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin. Several characters in Virginia Wolff's novels are knitters. In the first decade of the 21st century, knitting has been a key element in several novels[16] and even murder mysteries.

Yarn for hand-knitting is usually sold as balls or skeins (hanks), although it may also be wound on spools or cones. Skeins and balls are generally sold with a yarn-band, a label that describes the yarn's weight, length, dye lot, fiber content, washing instructions, suggested needle size, likely gauge, etc. It is common practice to save the yarn band for future reference, especially if additional skeins must be purchased. Knitters generally ensure that the yarn for a project comes from a single dye lot. The dye lot specifies a group of skeins that were dyed together and thus have precisely the same color; skeins from different dye-lots, even if very similar in color, are usually slightly different and may produce a visible stripe when knitted together. If a knitter buys insufficient yarn of a single dye lot to complete a project, additional skeins of the same dye lot can sometimes be obtained from other yarn stores or online.

The thickness of the yarn is a significant factor in determining the gauge, i.e., how many stitches and rows are required to cover a given area for a given stitch pattern. Thicker yarns generally require thicker knitting needles, whereas thinner yarns may be knit with thick or thin needles. Hence, thicker yarns generally require fewer stitches, and therefore less time, to knit up a given garment. Patterns and motifs are coarser with thicker yarns; thicker yarns produce bold visual effects, whereas thinner yarns are best for refined patterns. Yarns are grouped by thickness into six categories: superfine, fine, light, medium, bulky and superbulky; quantitatively, thickness is measured by the number of wraps per inch (WPI). The related weight per unit length is usually measured in tex or dernier.

Before knitting, the knitter will typically transform a hank into a ball where the yarn emerges from the center of the ball; this making the knitting easier by preventing the yarn from becoming easily tangled. This transformation may be done by hand, or with a device known as a ballwinder. When knitting, some knitters enclose their balls in jars to keep them clean and untangled with other yarns; the free yarn passes through a small hole in the jar-lid.

The process of knitting has three basic tasks: (1) the active (unsecured) stitches must be held so they don't drop; (2) these stitches must be released sometime after they are secured; and (3) new bights of yarn must be passed through the fabric, usually through active stitches, thus securing them. In very simple cases, knitting can be done without tools, using only the fingers to do these tasks; however, hand-knitting is usually carried out using tools such as knitting needles or rigid frames. Using nothing more than my husband's advice, I created the most horrendously constructed quilt ever made! But, I was pleased with it and my son used it until it finally fell apart 10 years later.

Because I had tons of scraps from my fashion and decorative sewing, I decided to give quilting another try. In the beginning, I only used my scraps. Eventually, though, I ran out of useable bits and had to buy some yardage. At the time, it did seem to be totally wasteful to cut up that perfectly pretty fabric! Now, I don't think twice about it. The only decision to make is whether I want to make a lovable utility quilt, a beautiful heirloom quilt, or enter a show with a fabulous art quilt.

These days, I create quilts of my own design in colors that I like … not necessarily those that others would choose. I add appliqué and machine embroidery when inspired, and use quilt making as my main creative expression. For those who need it, making quilts is also an excellent form of therapy for both physical and mental health!

Teaching is Learning in Quilting!

Although I teach the art of making quilts myself, I am anxiously awaiting the start of the new class that I will be taking tonight! I take five or six online classes a year, mostly for fun, but they are also a great way to learn new techniques … or old ones that I just haven't tried before.

This class will teach me more about my new obsession for quilt embroidery and is also a great reason to stock up on my quilting supplies. Hey, anything that promotes shopping is fantastic in my book! This particular class will concentrate on creating the highly embellished Victorian art of crazy quilting. Up to now, I haven't done much embellishing, except for a few buttons or a bit of ribbon, so I'm looking forward to the permission to totally go overboard on the decorative aspects of this quilt style!

When I first started making quilts,I was under the sad impression that all quilts had to be just full of color! The first quilt I made included solids in red, blue, yellow and green for my son's first big-boy bed. All of these colors were equally dark, and I added nothing to soften the look. My next quilt was a little softer, but still had way too many dark colors. The third quilt had some lighter colors, and that is when I realized that the most beautiful quilts are those that have colors that blend.

Of course, blending doesn't mean that all the colors have to be completely of the same tone. No, a pretty quilt can be completely tonal – all shades of purple for instance or have a high contrast like redwork quilts. But, the colors must blend together so that the quilt looks finished as a whole, without one color totally overwhelming the rest. Color choices seem to be the most difficult decision a quilter ever makes, and it truly doesn't have to be. Start with one color that you like and then choose a lighter or darker one that compliments it. Stop there, or add more. With time, color comfort comes to all of us.

With me, I am always nervous that I will do too much. I put too much decorative stitching on clothing that I make; too many ruffles on the pillows; too much fussiness on just about every project. So, I'm hoping that this class will help free my inner decorative artist so that I can add embellishments to my heart's content without also going insane with it!

One of the best features of quilt embroidery is the option to try out ideas on a small scale. With the machine embroidery designs provided in my class, all the guesswork will be taken care of for me. I just need to choose my thread colors and fabric! The class will also teach me how to use the regular decorative stitches on my machine to replicate the intricate hand-embroidery designs the Victorian women did with such pride. Doing just one block at a time instead of working on a huge quilt before deciding that my ideas didn't work out the way I wanted will save me time, money and frustration! Lovely! As much as I hate messes, I look forward to seeing my sewing room jumbled with lots of colorful blocks in the crazy quilting style. Since I love making quilts – and a lot of people think we quilters are crazy – maybe making quilts in the quilt embroidery technique will be my new favorite fiber art.

I have my whole life have purchased many books knitting and knitting on the road. My latest buy is Arctic Lace by Donna Druchunas. This is a wonderful book step by step introduction to knitting and designing lace. Of particular interest is the use of Muskox yarn. So, after buying some of Windy Valley Muskox Yarn I learn how to use this wondrous fiber to create a lace shawl.

Reading this book - and Donna's blog - is a glimpse into a world of top decision makers in Alaska - a place few of us ever dare. Learn about the Yup? Ik and Inupiat people, their villages and Muskox. I have learned how town and every village has its own peak patterns in the clothing and the Oomingmak Co-op that helps to promote traditional lace with Muskox yarn.

For those of you who are familiar with the Muskox, it is an animal in the Arctic Circle. The fiber, which is called from the animal Qiviut. Gathered is the right word because the wool is not from the Muskox sheered, like the wool of sheep, but brushed off Qiviut the animal when it naturally raises his coat. can Qiviut is one of the warmest, softest and lightest of the fibers are working with, it's the fluffy-soft underside wool from the musk ox - Oomingmak - umimmak in Greenland. I have 8 reps, and after it turned out to block it quite large, but light as a feather. It hangs around my shoulders a treat with a softness felt, believed to be. I have really enjoyed reading the Arctic Lace book and working conditions with Qiviut yarn.
